Town 23 km north of Tapalpa
A pine-forest town north of Tapalpa known for wool sarapes, rustic furniture and its August fiesta of San Bartolomé.
Atemajac de Brizuela is a mountain town in the northern Sierra de Tapalpa, surrounded by pine forest, and the seat of its own municipality. It takes the second part of its name from Colonel Miguel de Brizuela, whose monument stands in town.
The town is known for handmade goods tied to the forest and the ranches around it: wool sarapes and blankets, leatherwork and huaraches, carved wood and rustic furniture, and items woven from ocochal, the dry pine needles of the sierra. Its main church is the temple of San Bartolomé, whose fiesta on August 23 and 24 is the biggest of the year, followed by the fiesta of the Virgen de la Defensa in early September.
Outside town, the Mirador del Divisadero looks out over the sierra and the valleys below. Atemajac is a good stop on the back road between Tapalpa and Ferrería de Tula for travelers who want to see a working sierra town.
