Town 26 km west of Mazamitla
A quiet sierra town with a huge garden plaza and iron kiosk, a local history museum and a 17th-century hacienda aqueduct.
Concepción de Buenos Aires is a small town on the western side of the Sierra del Tigre, named for its patron, the Immaculate Conception, and for the pine-scented air that blows through it. Locals also call it Pueblo Nuevo, since it is younger than most towns in the region, but its adobe houses and tile roofs give it an old-fashioned feel.
Its best feature is the very large plaza, full of planters and paths that lead to a tall wrought-iron kiosk on a stone base. Facing it is the parish of the Immaculate Conception, more recent than the colonial churches of neighboring towns. The House of Culture holds a small history museum, and outside town stands the stone aqueduct of the former Hacienda Toluquilla, built in the 17th century to bring water to the estate.
The hills around town have yielded figurines and possible pre-Hispanic mounds, and the dams on the outskirts are used for fishing. It is a good stop for travelers looping through the sierra between Mazamitla and La Manzanilla de la Paz.
