Nogueras

Nogueras is a small village about 2 kilometers from Comala that grew up around a sugar hacienda. Its best-known resident was the painter and designer Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo, who owned the hacienda and whose work, including his illustrations for UNICEF greeting cards, made him one of Colima's most celebrated artists.

Since 1996 the old hacienda buildings have housed the Museo Universitario Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo, run by the University of Colima. Behind its thick walls, five rooms display his paintings, furniture and ironwork designs, along with a collection of pre-Hispanic pieces that he and the hacienda's workers gathered from the ground of Nogueras and its surroundings, including the clay figures for which ancient Colima is famous.

The museum is part of a wider cultural complex in Nogueras, with gardens and old hacienda structures, and the village itself is a quiet, green place for a stroll. It is close enough to Comala to combine with lunch in the pueblo.
