About Aquiles Serdán
Aquiles Serdán is a small ranchería on the Pacific side of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, on the low coastal plain about 900 m back from the sea and less than 10 m above it. It lies roughly 7 km north-west of Mayto, about 31 km west of El Tuito in a straight line, on the dirt road network that fans out from El Tuito to the villages of the southern Cabo Corrientes coast. Like many Mexican settlements it is named after Aquiles Serdán, the Puebla revolutionary killed in 1910 at the start of the Mexican Revolution. The intermittent Río Tecolotlán reaches the sea just south of the village.
It is a very small place: 128 inhabitants at the 2020 census, up from 79 in 2005 and 125 in 2010. Houses spread along a handful of dirt streets, with a kindergarten and a primary school, and the neighbouring hamlet of Naranjitos, with its own small schools, sits about 1.3 km to the north-west. Connections are thin: at the last census only about half the homes had a mobile phone and around one in eight had internet.
There is nothing set up for tourists in the village itself, but it is a quiet base on one of the wildest stretches of the Jalisco coast. The long golden beach of Mayto, with its sea-turtle camp run by the University of Guadalajara, is a short drive south, and beyond it are the sheltered bay of Tehuamixtle and the estuary at Villa del Mar and Ipala. Bring cash: there are no banks or ATMs anywhere on this coast.
