About Villa del Mar
Villa del Mar is a small seaside village on the open Pacific coast of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, about 26 km west of El Tuito at the end of the road that comes down from the sierra to Mayto and Tehuamixtle. It stands just above the shore, a couple of kilometers south-east of Tehuamixtle's oyster bay, with the hamlet of Ipala a kilometer to the south-east. The 2020 census counted 278 people here, more than twice the 128 of 2005, and the village has the coast's upper-secondary school, an EMSAD.
Along with Mayto and Tehuamixtle, Villa del Mar is one of the few places on this remote coast with somewhere to stay, and local listings count four groups of rustic cabins in the village. Cabañas El Cielito has about ten cabins, some with a porch or balcony looking out to sea, a swimming pool and a restaurant serving seafood, soups, pasta, burgers and fajitas. Cabañas Ecológicas El Ocaso has four simple cabins on a low bluff, with a small grocery but no restaurant, no TV and no window screens. Through the cabins and the hotels of Mayto you can arrange horses and ATVs, and local men take visitors fishing, diving and snorkeling.
The village also has a conservation side. Visitors can stay here to take part in sea-turtle protection work run with the University of Guadalajara and a community environmental watch committee; the same university runs the large turtle camp at Mayto, a few kilometers up the coast. The rest is simple pleasures: watching the sun go down over the Pacific, walking to Tehuamixtle for oysters, and enjoying a coast with no crowds. There are no banks or ATMs on this side of the municipality, so bring cash.
