About Museo del Arte en Piel

The Museo del Arte en Piel, the museum of leather art, is a small private museum on Calle Juárez in the historic centre of Puerto Vallarta, a few steps from the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the main square. It opened on 1 November 2020 and is listed in the Mexican government's cultural information system as a privately run museum.

The collection is the work of one man, the leather artisan Alfonso Nuño Romero, who spent years researching historical dress before recreating it in hide. On display are the outfits of cowboys, of indigenous chiefs and of the guerrilla fighters of the Mexican Revolution, made up of boots, vests, jackets, chaps, hats, belts, headdresses and other classic garments, all cut and stitched from leather. The result sits somewhere between a craft workshop and a costume museum, and it shows how much skill goes into tooled and sewn leatherwork.

It is a short visit that fits easily into a walk around the Centro, between the church, the plaza and the Malecón. Entry is by voluntary contribution, and the museum keeps weekday and Saturday-morning hours, so plan around Sundays, when it is closed.
