About Malecón de Puerto Vallarta

The Malecón is the seawall promenade of downtown Puerto Vallarta. It starts by the Hotel Rosita at Calle 31 de Octubre, runs south about twelve blocks past the main plaza and the Los Arcos open-air amphitheatre, and crosses the mouth of the Río Cuale on a footbridge into the Zona Romántica, roughly a mile (about 1.5 km) in all. The main stretch, Paseo Díaz Ordaz, is closed to cars. Locals call it simply "el Male", and for generations it has been where Vallarta families come out in the evening.

The first seawall went up in 1935-36 and was extended between 1940 and 1952. Hurricane Kenna smashed much of it in 2002, and in 2011 a joint team of the Dutch landscape firm West 8 with Trama Arquitectos and Estudio 3.14 rebuilt it as a wide pedestrian walkway with shaded seating and view lines to the bay. The paving uses the local technique of setting river pebbles into patterns; the main design follows a Wixárika (Huichol) creation story drawn by artist Fidencio Benítez. The city restored the mosaics, benches and the big PUERTO VALLARTA letters in 2024, and in August 2025 it approved extending the promenade north from 31 de Octubre to Calle Argentina along Avenida México.

What makes the walk is its open-air sculpture collection. The Boy on the Seahorse by Rafael Zamarripa, put here in 1976, is the city's emblem; nearby are Ramiz Barquet's Nostalgia (1984), Carlos Espino's Triton and Nereid (1990), Alejandro Colunga's surreal chair-figures of the Rotonda del Mar (1996), Sergio Bustamante's In Search of Reason (2000), whose figures climb a ladder you can climb too, Mathis Lidice's Millennium (2001) at the north end, the bronze urchins of Erizados (2006) and Jim Demetro's Vallarta Dancers. The striped little lighthouse, the Faro del Malecón, no longer works but is a landmark of its own.

The narrow strip of sand and stones in front is a place to sit, not to swim. In the early morning fishermen mend nets here; by late afternoon the walkway fills with families, street performers, sand sculptors, the Papantla flyers spinning down their pole, and crowds lining the wall for the sun to drop into the bay.

How to get to Malecón de Puerto Vallarta

Drive from Puerto Vallarta: 5 min, 4 km

The Malecón runs along the waterfront of El Centro, from Calle 31 de Octubre south to the Río Cuale. From the airport, wait on the airport side of the highway for a city bus marked "Centro" (not Pitillal or Bobadilla); they come every few minutes, cost 22 pesos (January 2026) and drop you a block or two from the seafront in about 20-30 minutes. From the hotel zone and Marina Vallarta the same "Centro" buses run down Avenida México. From the Zona Romántica you simply walk north across the Cuale footbridge.
