About ChocoMuseo
The ChocoMuseo is a small chocolate museum, shop and workshop in downtown Puerto Vallarta, at Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez 128, just up the hill from the Malecón. It is one of a small group of ChocoMuseos, with others in Peru, Guatemala and Nicaragua, and it makes its own chocolate on site from Mexican cocoa beans.
The museum itself is free. Its displays walk through how cacao is grown and turned into chocolate, and through some 4,000 years of cacao history in Mexico. In the shop you can watch the melangers grind cocoa and see chocolate tempered by hand on marble, and the tasting bar lets you sample dark chocolates from 60 to 100 percent, milk chocolate, cocoa-nib tea, liqueurs, sauces and jams, plus cocoa-butter beauty products.
Most people come for a workshop. The two-hour Bean to Bar class has you roast and grind cacao beans, prepare three traditional chocolate drinks, hear the story of cacao from the Maya to the conquistadors and the industrial revolution, and mould your own chocolates to take home; there is a 50-minute mini workshop for families with small children, a truffle class, a combined total-chocolate session, éclair and macaron classes, and a three-hour mole poblano workshop that starts with a trip to the local market to buy the chiles. Classes run in English and Spanish and are kept small, so it is worth booking ahead.
