About Museo Morelense de Arte Contemporáneo Juan Soriano

The Museo Morelense de Arte Contemporáneo Juan Soriano (MMAC) opened on 8 June 2018 with the show "Comenzar siempre, una aproximación a la Colección Juan Soriano". It covers roughly 10,000 square metres in Cuernavaca's Amatitlán district and took four years to build. The architects are JSa Arquitectura, led by Javier Sánchez Corral, who designed tall white volumes with plenty of natural light for flexible exhibition space.

The core of the museum is the artist's collection of about 1,200 works: oil paintings, sculptures, prints, posters, drawings and photographs, plus an archive of more than thirty boxes of correspondence. At the opening the central gallery also showed letters, sketches and works on paper. The building has three spaces for temporary shows, an open forum, rooms for workshops, concerts, talks and film cycles, and a two-floor library on modern and contemporary art that anyone can use.

Outside, the sculpture garden holds 15 monumental Soriano sculptures among a wide variety of plants, trees more than 200 years old and an apantle, the historic irrigation channel that runs across the grounds. It is the part best enjoyed slowly, and the museum runs a monthly family programme there.

Recent guides list free admission; in 2018 it cost 45 pesos, with free entry for Morelos residents, students and on Sundays, so confirm before you go. Hours also vary between sources: the most recent gives Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 16:00.
