About Ciudad Industrial del Valle de Cuernavaca

CIVAC, short for Ciudad Industrial del Valle de Cuernavaca, is not a village or a place for a stroll: it is an industrial park with a residential area beside it, covering about 230 hectares (2.3 km²) in the municipality of Jiutepec, roughly 10 minutes by road east of Cuernavaca. It is listed here because it appears on maps, in work addresses and on many routes across the metropolitan area, and anyone arriving on business will want to know what it is.

The first factory, Mexama, opened in 1961, and the industrial city was officially established on 4 March 1966 under a decree from President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz. That same year Nissan Mexicana opened its first assembly plant outside Japan in CIVAC; it is now the largest facility in the park, with two plants and more than 2,000 workers. Other companies named include Roche (formerly Syntex), Unilever, NEC, Baxter, Givaudan and GlaxoSmithKline, with about 120 more said to operate there. English Wikipedia calls it the most important economic development centre in Morelos.

The owners' association PROCIVAC, created in 1972, handles services such as water, rubbish collection, street lighting and upkeep of roads and green areas; since 1993 its remit has been limited to the industrial zone. The residential side has schools from daycare to middle school, two technological centres, medical services, places of worship, parks, banks and shops. The climate is warm, averaging 21 °C with summer rains.

If you are after tourism, go on to Cuernavaca, Tepoztlán or Cuautla; if you have an appointment at one of the companies, this page is meant to help you get your bearings.

How to get to Ciudad Industrial del Valle de Cuernavaca

Drive from Cuernavaca: 10 min, 9 km

CIVAC is in Jiutepec, about 7 km east of central Cuernavaca in a straight line and some 10 minutes by car, according to Wikipedia. From Mexico City the usual way is the México-Cuernavaca toll highway (95D) to Cuernavaca and then on toward Jiutepec; Rome2Rio gives about 58 km and 55 minutes between the Cuernavaca area and Jiutepec, a general figure not specific to CIVAC. Once there, use Google Maps or Waze with "CIVAC, Jiutepec" (postal code 62578), because the park is large and has several entrances.

By bus there is no direct service from Mexico City: take a bus from the Terminal Central del Sur (Taxqueña) to Cuernavaca, about every 30 minutes and roughly an hour, then a taxi or city transport to Jiutepec and CIVAC. Wikipedia mentions a frequent transport system between CIVAC and Cuernavaca, but we could not find the routes, so ask at the terminal. From Tepoztlán it is about 11 km in a straight line, roughly 25 to 30 minutes by road.
