About Cliserio Alanís

Until 1932 this place was called San Gaspar, after the sugar hacienda it grew around. That year it was raised to the status of congregación (on 10 September), and on 15 December it received the name Cliserio Alanís, after a Zapatista general born in Jiutepec who joined the Maderista cause in 1911 under Modesto Rangel and was killed in a Carrancista ambush on 12 March 1918. The renaming came when religious names were removed from settlements.

The San Gaspar hacienda has a long record. In 1614 a grant for a cane field went to doña Inés Soto, and around 1740 the standard-bearer José del Palacio, one of the leading sugar producers of the 18th century, turned it into a working mill. It then passed through several owners, among them Delfín Sánchez, Benito Juárez's son-in-law, and in 1927 General Francisco Serrano bought it. Today the main house and the perimeter wall still stand and the chapel is kept for worship, while the mill building has lost its roof and traces of the aqueduct remain. Part of the land is now a golf club and a housing development, and the main house is used for private events.

The census count rose from 98 people in 1900 to 708 in 1990, 1,478 in 2000, 2,092 in 2010 and 2,706 in 2020. It lies at roughly 1,300 m above sea level, about 3 km in a straight line from the centre of Jiutepec, and is the fifth most populous locality in the municipality. In September 2016, Jiutepec's Independence Day festivities opened with a horseback parade that set out from the old hacienda. There is no lodging inside the locality; the nearest hotels are 3 to 4 km away.
