    About Museo Morelense de Arte Popular

    The MMAPO, as visitors call it, keeps and promotes the handcrafts of every region of Morelos. It sits in a colonial house in downtown Cuernavaca on Calle Miguel Hidalgo, a short walk from the zócalo, which makes it an easy stop on a stroll through the city. Admission is free.

    The galleries tour the state by craft: the potters of Cuentepec, the weavers of Hueyapan, the artisans of Tlayacapan. The collection includes papier-mâché masks and dolls, textiles, ceramics, drawn-thread lace and wood carving, and the museum's photos show alebrijes, carved masks, a mole pot and hand-carved candles. One displayed piece depicts Palm Sunday in Yautepec, another reminder that each town in the state has its own specialty. Lonely Planet notes that many pieces are shown outdoors.

    The content changes through the year. The museum features a "Piece of the Month", shows entries from the state's Identidad Morelense de Arte Popular contest, and stages a Day of the Dead exhibition that visitors single out as a highlight. A craft shop sells work made in the state, handy if you want to take something home with its maker's name on it. Guides give Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00; the street number appears as 9-13 in some sources and 239 in others, so confirm on the map.

    How to get to Museo Morelense de Arte Popular

    Drive from Cuautla: 45 min, 53 km

    The museum is on Calle Miguel Hidalgo in central Cuernavaca (guides give the number as 9-13 or 239). It is a walk from the zócalo and the Cathedral, and the other downtown sights are close by.

    From Mexico City take the México-Cuernavaca toll highway (95D). By bus, Pullman de Morelos runs from the Terminal Sur (Taxqueña) to Cuernavaca (about 75 minutes without traffic per a travel guide, to the Casino de la Selva terminal); Estrella de Oro also runs regular service, per Mexico City's official transport guide. From the terminal a taxi or ride-hailing gets you downtown; you can cover the rest on foot.
