About Estación Mogoñé

Mogoñé comes from Mixe: muug, maize, and ñé, water, so roughly "maize water". Estación Mogoñé was founded on 1 January 1907 beside the stop on the Interoceanic Railway, and took its name from Mogoñé Viejo, the older village about 1.5 km to the southwest. Spanish Wikipedia dates the station to 1887, while the English entry gives 29 June 1894, so sources disagree on the year.

The locality belongs to the municipality of San Juan Guichicovi, at 95 metres above sea level and about 7 km northeast of the municipal seat in a straight line. The census counted 1,586 people in 2005, 1,466 in 2010 and 1,294 in 2020, in about 437 occupied homes. More than half identify as Indigenous (53% in 2020) and 25% speak an Indigenous language. Nearby localities include El Zarzal (1,006 people), Piedra Blanca (1,310) and Río Pachiñe (1,375).

The station went decades without trains. On 29 August 2023 a locomotive ran over the rehabilitated track as a test, and on 22 December 2023 Line Z service reopened with the station still unfinished. It has one platform and three tracks; coming from Salina Cruz it follows Matías Romero and precedes Donají.

This is a place to step off the train and see the Isthmus countryside, not a destination with attractions of its own.

By road: the locality is about 7 km straight-line northeast of San Juan Guichicovi (somewhat more by road; approx.), and Matías Romero is the nearest service town. We found no source for a highway number or a bus or colectivo line, so ask in Matías Romero or San Juan Guichicovi about local transport. It is best to base yourself in Matías Romero.
