Nature reserve 6 km north of San Carlos
A palm-filled oasis canyon in the desert mountains just north of San Carlos, with spring-fed pools and a scrambly trail.
Nacapule is a narrow canyon cut into the volcanic Sierra El Aguaje, just behind San Carlos, and it feels like a secret. The canyon is only about a kilometer long, but its rock walls rise around 80 meters and trap enough shade and spring water to keep a lush oasis alive in the middle of the Sonoran Desert.
Botanists have counted some 285 plant species here, including three kinds of native fan palms (the Mexican fan palm, the Sonoran palmetto, and the Brahea palm) along with wild figs clinging to the cliffs. Small springs feed shallow pools, and after the summer rains short waterfalls can run down the rock.
The canyon is run by the local ejido as a nature park. Two trails start at the entrance: a short, easy loop through the palm grove, and a longer route up toward the pools that turns into rock scrambling, with a ladder beside a dry waterfall. The full out-and-back is roughly 3.5 kilometers. Because the pools are so small, sunscreen and lotions are not allowed in the water.
What to see and do
Walk the short trail through the grove of native fan palms.
Scramble up the Ojo de Agua trail to the spring-fed pools; wear real shoes.
Look for wild figs rooted in the cliffs and birds in the canyon shade.
Go early in the day, before the desert heat builds.
Getting there
From San Carlos, follow the signs for Nacapule north through the residential streets; the last part is a bumpy dirt road, about 20 to 30 minutes in all. The ejido charges a small entrance fee, and the park is generally open Tuesday to Sunday during daylight hours. Bring water, a hat, and cash.
