About Paseo del Ángel

Paseo del Ángel is the stretch of Calle General Ángel Flores that runs behind the cathedral in the historic heart of Culiacán, turned by the city planning institute in 2011 into a food and culture corridor with cobblestones, trees and street lamps. In 2018 it won the traffic-calmed streets category of the Calles Mexicanas competition run by Mexico's urban development ministry and the Inter-American Development Bank, out of more than 140 entries. In June 2024, at the Tianguis Internacional de Pueblos Mágicos in San Antonio, Texas, Mexico's federal Tourism Secretariat named it a Barrio Mágico, the first in Sinaloa, and on July 11 the plaque was unveiled at the head of the street, beside the Teatro MIA, to the sound of a banda.

The street lives on food. There are seafood places, northwestern regional kitchens serving pescado zarandeado, tacos gobernador and grilled chicken, sushi bars, wings and burgers, cafés, and breakfast spots for molletes and tamales; one café sits in part of the building of the Noroeste newspaper. The world's largest aguachile, more than three tonnes of it, was made here, giving Culiacán its first Guinness record. What began as a weekend promenade now opens all week, and since 2025 the street closes to cars Thursday to Saturday from 6 pm to 1 am, with music, art and patrols by municipal police and the National Guard.

The Paseo is also the gateway to walking the old centre. Behind it rises the Catedral Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, begun in 1842, finished in 1885 and a basilica since 1975, with a nave 62 metres long. Further along Ángel Flores, at the corner of Donato Guerra, stands the neoclassical stone Santuario del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, from 1908. And on Avenida Álvaro Obregón, the shady Plazuela Obregón fills on weekend afternoons with live music and older couples dancing.

How to get to Paseo del Ángel

Paseo del Ángel is in the very centre of Culiacán, behind the cathedral. Culiacán International Airport, to the southwest, is 11.6 km away by road, about 20 minutes by taxi or Uber. The Central Internacional de Autobuses, on the west side of the city, handles buses from the north, central Mexico and the United States and is 5.6 km away, just over ten minutes by car. The city has more than 68 urban bus routes, most with air conditioning; those marked "Centro", such as Toledo-Centro, Campiña-Centro or Huizaches-Centro, drop you a few blocks away, and there is a stop called Paseo del Ángel. Once downtown, the cathedral, the sanctuary and the plazuelas are all within walking distance. Mocorito, the nearest Pueblo Mágico by driving time, is 136 km away, about 2 hours; Cosalá is 115 km on a slower road, about 2 h 20 min.
