Presa del Llano is where people from Villa del Carbón go for a day in the woods. The reservoir sits in the pine and oak forests of the Sierra de Monte Alto, about 12 km southwest of town, and the land around it has been turned into an ecotourism park run for weekend visitors and families.
The park is built around the water. You can rent a rowboat and paddle the length of the reservoir, cast a line from the fishing area, or follow the hiking trails into the forest. There is a zip line for something more lively, grills and tables for a picnic, and a restaurant and food stands where trout, the local specialty, is the thing to order.
It is also a good base for staying the night. The park has around 28 cabins and a camping area, and at this altitude evenings by a fire are part of the experience. Weekends and holidays get busy with families from Mexico City and Toluca, so come on a weekday if you want the lake mostly to yourself.

Getting there
The park is about 12 km southwest of Villa del Carbón, around 20 minutes by car on the road toward Toluca; leave town past the San Jerónimo arch and follow the signs for Presa del Llano. A taxi from the center is the easiest option if you don't have a car.
