About Jiquipilco

Jiquipilco is the seat of an Otomí municipality in the north-west of the State of Mexico, at about 2,750 m. The 2024 municipal monograph says the Otomí settled here in 1274 and that Franciscan evangelisation began in the mid-1500s; the parish of San Juan Bautista was founded in 1592. The locality has some 2,100 people (INEGI 2020 via Pueblos América); the whole municipality, 76,826. It now carries the Pueblo con Encanto designation, with Bicentennial works including a monument to the Tlachiquero (the pulque tapper), a Paseo Bicentenario, a kiosk and an arch.

What sets the place apart is its calendar. March brings the feast of the Señor de Jiquipilco, a tepozán-wood Christ brought from Seville in the mid-1500s; he used to be carried out in procession to ask for rain, and today the feast has a novena, dawn mañanitas at six, a mass and a procession with dancers. It is the frame for the pulque fair, since the hills are full of maguey. On 6 January the Virgen de Loreto is honoured with pastoras, Moors-and-Christians and concheros dances; 24 June is San Juan Bautista. A live Holy Week passion play has run since 2001.

There is a Thursday tianguis in the town. In the municipality you find the El Jabalí and Presa Verde dams and Cerro La Bufa, about 3,550 to 3,600 m, for hiking and camping, and the sanctuary of the Señor del Cerrito on Cerro de Santa Cruz, where thousands of pilgrims arrive on 3 May.

How to get to Jiquipilco

Drive from Toluca: 45 min, 52 km

Jiquipilco is about 30 km straight-line north of Toluca; by road allow roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour. The toll-free roads named in the municipal monograph are Jiquipilco-Temoaya, Jiquipilco-Ixtlahuaca and Jiquipilco-Naucalpan: from Toluca one option is to head toward Temoaya and carry on to Jiquipilco.

By public transport, first reach the Terminal de Toluca at Felipe Berriozábal 101, open 24 hours (from Mexico City, buses run to Toluca every few minutes from Observatorio and the Terminal Norte). According to the monograph, Autobuses Temoayenses run Jiquipilco-Temoaya-Toluca; other lines connect with Ixtlahuaca (Estrella de Oro, Santa María del Llano) and Naucalpan (Herradura de Plata or Flecha Roja). Check times at the terminal, as the monograph gives none.
