About San Luis Ayucan

San Luis Ayucan is the most populous locality in the municipality of Jilotzingo: 4,275 residents in 2020 out of the municipality's 19,877. It sits at 2,714 m in the Monte Alto range, north of the Monte de las Cruces, and its land is spread over scattered barrios: Barrio Grande, Ensido, Endonica, Monfi, La Cuesta, Las Manzanas and others, so there is no single compact centre. Around it rise Cerro Ñango (3,171 m, 1.4 km away), Gachupín (3,001 m), Texcane (3,204 m) and Geishto (3,240 m).

The name is Nahuatl and probably comes from ayotl (turtle) or ayotli (squash) plus can, "place"; Wikipedia leaves it as a possibility. The first settlers of the area were Otomí, and a decree of 1868 placed Ayucan within Santa Ana Jilotzingo. Its patron saint is San Luis Gonzaga, and the photo of the village shows a chapel.

The most distinctive thing is Holy Week: according to Wikipedia, in Ayucan participants dress in red, as the devil, with a mask and a whip called a chicote, and on Holy Saturday they splash water on people. The climate is cold mountain: 12.5 °C on average, recorded lows around -5 °C, about 1,070 mm of rain a year and very occasional snowfalls, such as that of 1983.
