About Huixquilucan de Degollado

Huixquilucan de Degollado, seat of the municipality of Huixquilucan, sits in the Sierra de las Cruces west of Mexico City, at about 2,712 metres. The 2020 census counted 10,735 people. Its name is explained as place full of edible thistles; Otomí people lived here before the Mexica, and under Tlacopan's rule it was tied to the Triple Alliance. The same municipality has tower blocks and gated developments such as Bosque Real, but the old town is a different world.

The parish of San Antonio de Padua, from the 18th century, stands in the centre, and General Santos Degollado, who gave the town its second name, was buried in its atrium in 1861. Close by is the chapel of Santa María Magdalena, from the early 1700s with a pink quarry-stone facade, and other chapels INAH lists. Local history says the Jesuits founded a language college for Indigenous languages here in 1580, and that Leona Vicario hid in the town from 3 to 10 March 1813. The Jardín de la Cultura groups an auditorium, a library and the Museo de Huixquilucan.

Fiestas are part of daily life: the municipality holds 87 patron-saint celebrations a year, with decorated streets and fireworks, among them San Antonio on 13 June. People eat mole de guajolote, barbacoa and pipián, and the area has a tradition of paper and piñata work.
