About Magdalena Chichicaspa

La Magdalena Chichicaspa is in the north of Huixquilucan municipality, next to Naucalpan, with San Cristóbal Texcalucan to the south, San José Huiloteapan to the west and the Bosque Real estate to the east. The 2020 census counted 15,612 people, up from 12,193 in 2010. The name is explained two ways: "in the bitter water" (chichicapan), or tzitzicazpan, "where nettles grow"; since the land was Otomí, it may carry another meaning. Otomí people founded the community, and the Chichicaspa chapel and its cult of Mary Magdalene date from the 18th century.

The land reform of 6 August 1921 created the Ejido de La Magdalena Chichicaspa, the Las Campanitas neighbourhood, where a sand and gravel pit appeared in the 1950s that the ejido still runs. The parish of Santa María Magdalena was canonically established on 5 July 1978. It is the church shown in this page's photo, standing at the centre of the community.

What you see here is village life: neighbourhoods with Otomí names (Dogora, Madho, Ñuni, Tixpada), carnitas and barbacoa from street stalls, and sweets made of milk, sugar and tamarind. The patron feasts are 22 July for Santa María Magdalena and 8 December for the Immaculate Conception. Others fall on 2 February, 3 May, 2 September and 12 December.

Most people work in trade; others make a living as fireworks makers, musicians, carpenters, woodcutters or bricklayers.

From the Metro you first need a connection to Naucalpan or Huixquilucan; there is no published direct published route, so ask at the stop.
