About Ciudad López Mateos

Ciudad López Mateos is the seat of the municipality of Atizapán de Zaragoza, and locals still just call it Atizapán. The official name honours President Adolfo López Mateos, who was born here on 26 May 1909. The municipality was created on 3 September 1874 and takes its “de Zaragoza” from General Ignacio Zaragoza. The 1985 earthquake and industrialisation brought in thousands of families; the city now has around 523,000 people (INEGI 2020), which Wikipedia ranks seventh in the state.

The old centre is small but has pieces worth seeing. The Templo de San Francisco de Asís was begun in 1580 and the Templo del Divino Salvador in 1662; the latter celebrates its patron on 6 August. The Museo Adolfo López Mateos opened in 1994 in the former town hall. On the outskirts stands the Puente Jorobado, from 1798, declared a historic monument in 2001. In the residential area of Las Arboledas you can find two Luis Barragán works, the Fuente de los Amantes and the Fuente del Campanario.

For open air there is Presa Madín (190 hectares), used for rowing, kayaking and sailing, with cycling and skating paths. The Festival Luminaria used to take place in March; since 2023 it has been replaced by the Festival Internacional de las Artes Atzán, run jointly with Cuautitlán Izcalli, Tlalnepantla and Nicolás Romero.

Ciudad López Mateos lies about 19 km in a straight line northwest of central Mexico City; by car it is roughly 23 minutes without traffic according to Rome2Rio, and much longer at rush hour. According to Wikipedia no Metro, Mexibús or rail line serves the municipality, but many bus and combi routes cross it and several end at Metro or Metrobús stations in the capital. The usual approach is to go to the Toreo transfer terminal and take a bus or combi marked Atizapán along Boulevard Adolfo López Mateos; confirm the current route with the operator, as we could not find an official map. Another option is to ride the Tren Suburbano to Cuautitlán and continue by local transport. The nearest pueblo on our list, Tepotzotlán, is about 17 km as the crow flies (roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car).
