About Buenavista

Buenavista is a very large colonia of Tultitlán, in the State of Mexico, pressed against the northern edge of Mexico City. It had 216,776 residents in 2020 according to INEGI, making it the biggest locality in the municipality and, per Wikipedia, the second-largest in Mexico that is not a municipal seat. It lies at about 2,333 m and its postal code is 54944. Watch the name: it has nothing to do with Buenavista station of the Tren Suburbano in Mexico City, which is the terminal at the other end of the line.

Do not expect a tourist destination: this is mass housing and neighbourhood commerce, and we found no source saying when it was built up. What makes it useful to a traveller is its closeness to the better sights of Tultitlán. In the municipal seat, Tultitlán de Mariano Escobedo, you will find the 16th-century church of San Lorenzo, the church of San Antonio de Padua, the Holy Cross chapel and a cypress at least 250 years old, and the Sierra de Guadalupe has an ecological park. The municipality's patron-saint feasts bring fairs and fireworks: San Antonio on 13 June and the Immaculate Conception on 8 December.

For a visitor, Buenavista is mostly a stop on the way north of the Valley of Mexico, well connected by train and Mexibús.

How to get to Buenavista

Drive from Mexico City: 35 min, 28 km

The train is the practical way: the Tren Suburbano (Buenavista-AIFA, also called Tren Felipe Ángeles) has a station at Lechería, in the municipality, and reaches Buenavista terminal in Mexico City in about 30 minutes; the short-trip fare is 11.50 pesos with the Movilidad Integrada card. The train runs Monday to Friday 5:00 am to midnight, Saturdays from 6:00 am and Sundays and holidays from 7:00 am. Mexibús Line 2 (Las Américas in Ecatepec to La Quebrada in Cuautitlán Izcalli) connects with the train at Lechería.

By road the distance to Mexico City is about 20 km in a straight line (roughly 25 to 40 minutes depending on traffic); check a map for the exact route. Tepotzotlán, the nearest pueblo, is about 13 km away in a straight line.
