About Cuautitlán

Cuautitlán is far older than most of its metropolitan neighbours. It was a Tepanec altepetl and later a tributary of the Triple Alliance, and it gave its name to the Nahuatl chronicle known as the Anales de Cuauhtitlan. Franciscans settled in the 16th century and built the San Buenaventura convent. The municipality was formed on 16 August 1824, the seat became a city by decree in 1968, and in 1973 it lost more than half its territory when Cuautitlán Izcalli was created. The city had 117,995 inhabitants in 2020 (178,847 in the municipality).

The centre is what you come for. The Catedral de San Buenaventura, built 1712 to 1732 and a cathedral since 1979, holds a group of paintings attributed to Martín de Vos. Parque de la Cruz keeps a 16th-century atrial cross. Jardín Benito Juárez has a clock tower from 1919 and a kiosk from 1965, and the ruins of the Third Order temple and the San José Milla temple stand nearby. There is also a Juan Diego house-museum and the church of El Cerrito.

The calendar brings the Feria del 12 de diciembre, tied to the Virgin of Guadalupe, and the Feria del Machero on the last weekend of January. A large tianguis sets up on Tuesdays along the La Joya bypass, and piñata making remains a local tradition.

How to get to Cuautitlán

Drive from Mexico City: 40 min, 35 km

The simplest way from Mexico City is the Tren Suburbano: it leaves Buenavista (where it meets Metro Line B and Metrobús Lines 1, 3 and 4) and reaches the Cuautitlán terminus, 27 km away, in about 25 minutes. It runs Monday to Friday 5 am to 12:30 am, Saturday 6 am to 12:30 am and Sunday 7 am to midnight. The station has a bus and colectivo interchange, and the centre is a few minutes away by local transport. By car, the México–Querétaro highway and the Circuito Exterior Mexiquense serve the area, and the main roads in town are the Cuautitlán–Tlalnepantla road, Avenida Melchor Ocampo and Boulevard Francisco I. Madero. Buses and combis also leave the Terminal Norte for Cuautitlán or Tula. Tepotzotlán is about 7 km away (roughly 10 to 15 minutes); the capital is about 27 km in a straight line, with very variable times depending on traffic.
