About San Martín Toltepec
Toltepec comes from Nahuatl (tulli, reed; tepetl, hill; co, place): "on the hill of the reeds". San Martín is the patron, Martin of Tours. The pueblo originario lies north of Toluca city at 2,682 m and had 2,738 residents in 2020 (INEGI), almost the same as in 2010 (2,753): the population has levelled off here.
Its history in numbers is modest: 400 people in 1900, 657 in 1950, 1,174 in 1960, a fall to 913 in 1970 and then a steady climb to 2,034 in 2000.
Its best-known building is the church and atrium, which the national catalogue of federal historic property lists as a chapel with stone walls and roofs, portals, bell towers and domes. The Wikimedia photo shows a white bell tower and a dome rising above stone walls. The village is a municipal delegation: in 2023 the city rebuilt about 400 m of calle 20 de Noviembre in concrete. There is no published published programme for its patron feast; Martin of Tours' liturgical day is 11 November, and it is worth asking at the delegación.

Drive from Toluca: 15 min, 12 km
By bus from Toluca: the Cultural line (Autotransportes Cultural de Toluca), listed by the MisRutas directory as San Martín Totoltepec to Centro Toluca, covers 17.2 km in about 57 minutes without traffic, roughly every 5 minutes, 14 pesos cash, with some 415 on-request stops. It uses Avenida Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada, the Toluca–Ixtlahuaca highway, calle Paseo Toltepec and Isidro Fabela (check with the driver, routes change). Do not mix it up with San Pedro or Santa María Totoltepec, other villages in Toluca with their own lines. During the 2026 Feria del Alfeñique an AlfeñiqueBus also ran from the Toluca terminal to San Martín Totoltepec (Andén 5, purple, along the Atlacomulco road).
By car the village is about 8 km straight north of Toluca (roughly 15 to 20 minutes); from Mexico City, reach Toluca first on the México–Toluca highway (15D) or by the El Insurgente train from Observatorio. Metepec is about 16 km away in a straight line.
