About San Mateo Otzacatipan
San Mateo Otzacatipan is one of the old native communities that Toluca has swallowed up; today it is a municipal delegation almost joined to the city, about 7 km northwest of the centre at roughly 2,600 m. The name is Nahuatl and, according to Wikipedia, means something like 'on the path through the grassland'; San Mateo was added after the Conquest.
Its roots are Matlatzinca. The Mexica renamed it Otzacatipan and gave it to Ahuízotl, Axayácatl's brother, and Franciscans from the Toluca convent evangelised it; a chapel of San Mateo shows up in the Lienzo de Santa Ana Tlapatitlán of 1569. For centuries people here lived off catching charales in the local waters, which earned it the unofficial nickname San Mateo de los Pescadores.
INEGI counted 22,574 residents in 2020. The Toluca International Airport, the Central de Abastos and the Toluca 2000 industrial park all lie in its territory, and the town has become largely residential, with many people commuting to study or work in Toluca. It is not a sightseeing destination, but for anyone flying in or out of Toluca it is the immediate neighbourhood.
