About San Mateo Oxtotitlán

Oxtotitlán means "next to the caves" (oztotl, cave; titlan, next to), and Saint Matthew the Evangelist is the village's saint. It is a delegación of the municipality of Toluca, about 3 km west of the city centre at 2,719 m, and the 2020 census (as quoted by Wikipedia) gives it 22,500 residents. It should not be confused with Nueva Oxtotitlán, which the city's 2026 programme treats as a separate delegación.

During the patron's festivities there are carnival-style walks through each barrio, with music, toritos, food, fireworks and mojigangas, the giant figures that a 2026 chronicle links to Oaxacan tradition. At Holy Week the Passion and Death of Christ is staged on a real hill, not in a street or field: the group is about 30 years old and in 2025 had 30 actors; it starts on Palm Sunday, and whoever plays Jesus stays in character from the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday.

The city has rebuilt streets here, among them Benito Juárez, Juan Aldama Sur and De los Panteones, and Avenida Filiberto Navas, which leads to the Parque de las Ciencias Sierra Morelos. The parish of San Mateo is in the Wiki Loves Monuments heritage catalogue.

How to get to San Mateo Oxtotitlán

Drive from Toluca: 5 min, 4 km

Oxtotitlán lies on the western side of Toluca, about 3 km in a straight line from the centre (roughly 10 to 15 minutes by car or taxi depending on traffic). Recent city works name streets here such as Benito Juárez, Juan Aldama Sur, De los Panteones, Paseo Matlatzincas and Avenida Filiberto Navas, and Avenida Adolfo López Mateos connects with Filiberto Navas toward Sierra Morelos park. There is no published bus route in the MisRutas directory that carries its name: ask at the Toluca terminal, or board any unit heading west and confirm with the driver.

From Mexico City, reach Toluca on the México–Toluca highway (15D) or the El Insurgente train (Observatorio to Toluca Centro) and finish the stretch by taxi. Metepec is about 10 km away in a straight line.
