About Chapultepec

This Chapultepec is not Mexico City's park but a Toluca-valley town, between Metepec, Mexicaltzingo and Calimaya, that gives its name to a municipality of its own. The 2020 census gave 7,120 people in town and 12,772 in the municipality, at an average of about 2,590 m. The name is Nahuatl too, read as "hill where there are grasshoppers". The Matlatzinca founded the town at an unknown date, the Mexica conquered it under Axayácatl and Gonzalo de Sandoval took it in 1521; in 1560 the Franciscans of Metepec evangelised it. On 29 October 1810 Hidalgo's army stopped here for breakfast on its way to Ocoyoacac, a day before the battle of Monte de las Cruces.

San Miguel Arcángel, the parish church, dates from the 16th century and was built by the Franciscans after the conquest. On Cerro del Chapulín, the municipality's highest point (2,672 m), a civic plaza dedicated to the Niños Héroes has a 360-degree lookout and a 24 m monumental flag. The Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla civic plaza has an eagle-head stela marking the Independence Route. At Easter, at the Cruces del Calvario, residents stage the Passion and lay sawdust carpets. Farming is still the main activity.

It is a short stop: the lookout and the church combine well with a visit to Metepec, 7 km away.

How to get to Chapultepec

Drive from Toluca: 15 min, 16 km

Chapultepec is about 14 km from Toluca in a straight line and 7 km from Metepec; allow 25 to 35 minutes by car from Toluca (approx.). The route out of Toluca is the Toluca-Tenango de Arista trunk road and pass through Metepec; once in the area, state road EM 44 (Mexicaltzingo-Tianguistenco-Xalatlaco) runs through the town, with a bypass around it. From the capital you go through Toluca first.

We found no direct bus or combi timetable; ask about the combis that run from Toluca and Metepec towards Mexicaltzingo or Tianguistenco, which pass through this area. Beware the namesake: search for "Chapultepec, Estado de México", not Bosque de Chapultepec.
