About Guadalupe Yancuictlalpan

Everyone calls it Gualupita. It is a community in the municipality of Tianguistenco, about 60 km from Mexico City and 30 from Toluca, and its Nahuatl name, Yancuictlalpan, means new land. It had 6,385 inhabitants in 2000. Nearly the whole place lives by weaving: sarapes, gabán coats, sweaters, scarves, blankets and other wool garments come off colonial-style wooden looms that pass down through families. Textile work in this area goes back at least to 1472, when maguey fibre was used, and after the Spaniards arrived it was blended with wool. That is why the village is nicknamed the land of the sarape.

The community has had help from Fomento Cultural Banamex's folk art support programme, created in 1996, to keep production going and widen sales. A press piece notes that a sweater from here appears in a 1962 Marilyn Monroe photo shoot.

In the middle stands the church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, begun in 1679 and finished in 1789, according to an inscription on the south tower. The liveliest thing is the tianguis: the main street fills with stalls of woollen clothing, especially in the cold months. Sources disagree on the days (Sundays only, or Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays), so if you are going on purpose, pick a Sunday. Bring cash for bargaining, though some stalls take cards.

How to get to Guadalupe Yancuictlalpan

Drive from Toluca: 30 min, 27 km

From Mexico City take the México-Toluca highway and, near La Marquesa, follow the Tenango-La Marquesa road toward Tianguistenco; it is about 60 km and 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic. Another option is highway 15 to Toluca and, at Ocoyoacac, the federal road to Tianguistenco. From Toluca (about 30 km) take the road to Tianguistenco and follow the signs to Guadalupe Yancuictlalpan. You can also come by the Tianguistenco-Mexicaltzingo road, which joins the Toluca-Tenango del Valle route, or the Tianguistenco-Amomolulco road. Buses and taxis run to Toluca and neighbouring towns; we found no direct line from the capital, so the usual way is via Toluca or Tianguistenco. Metepec is about 17 km away in a straight line.
