About San Gaspar Tlahuelilpan

San Gaspar Tlahuelilpan sits where Metepec meets San Mateo Atenco, and INEGI counted 11,001 residents in 2020. A century ago it was far smaller: the 1900 census found 1,145 people and 1960 still only 1,480. The growth came mostly after 1970, when the count jumped from 2,083 to 3,640 in ten years.

The name is Nahuatl, from tlalli (land), ahuelilli (irrigation) and pan, roughly "on the watered land". A local write-up says the plentiful water let families grow vegetables and legumes on chinampas. Before the Conquest it was a Matlatzinca community subject to Atenco; in colonial times it was one of twelve barrios of San Mateo Atenco, and in 1573 it was placed under Metepec because it lay so close.

Its patron is the Magus Gaspar, and the main feast falls around 6 January. The colonial church collapsed in the 1985 earthquake and a modern chapel replaced it; a small convent beside it still stands and, according to the same local text, needs restoring. Every January the village hosts a 10 km road race in honour of the Dulce Nombre de Jesús and the Three Kings, starting beside the main church; the 2026 edition ran on Sunday 11 January.
