About Isidro Fabela

Colonia Isidro Fabela is a small locality in the municipality of Lerma, in the Toluca Valley, at about 2,571 m. INEGI counted 634 residents in 2000, 1,478 in 2010 and 1,790 in 2020. It is named for Isidro Fabela Alfaro (Atlacomulco, 1882 – Cuernavaca, 1964), a lawyer, diplomat and writer who governed the State of Mexico from 1942 to 1945 and sat as a judge on the International Court of Justice in The Hague from 1946 to 1952. Do not confuse it with another colonia Isidro Fabela, in Tlalpan, Mexico City.

It is an everyday area, not a tourist one. Its most recognisable feature is its church, photographed on Wikimedia Commons, and we found no sources on festivals or a local history. What is interesting lies around it: Lerma municipality, with 170,327 people and its seat at Lerma de Villada, holds the Ciénegas del Lerma wetlands, with lagoons such as Chignahuapan and Chimiliapan, and the localities of Santa María and San Mateo Atarasquillo are close by. Toluca is about 14 km away in a straight line.

If you are coming from Mexico City, the El Insurgente interurban train has changed how people arrive: it has a station in Lerma, a few kilometres away, and from there it is a matter of a taxi or local transport.

How to get to Isidro Fabela

Drive from Toluca: 20 min, 16 km

From Mexico City, the easiest way is the México-Toluca interurban train, El Insurgente: from Observatorio station to the Lerma station (in San Pedro Tultepec), then a taxi or local transport to the colonia. The full ride from Observatorio to Zinacantepec takes about 39 minutes, and the line runs Monday to Friday 5:00 am to midnight, Saturdays from 6:00 am and Sundays and holidays from 7:00 am; fares range from 15 to 100 pesos depending on distance. Observatorio connects with the Metro (Lines 1 and 12) and the Poniente bus terminal.

From Toluca, about 14 km away in a straight line, urban buses link Lerma with Toluca and Metepec. For driving we found no source for roads and times; use a map and allow roughly 20 to 30 minutes from Toluca. Metepec, the nearest pueblo, is about 10 km away in a straight line.
