About Xonacatlán de Vicencio

Xonacatlán de Vicencio is the seat of the municipality of Xonacatlán, in the Toluca Valley at roughly 2,600 m. INEGI counted 22,953 people here in 2020. The name is Nahuatl and means 'among the onions' (xonacatl, onion). Wikipedia says Axayácatl conquered these lands in 1476 and the Spanish arrived in 1521; the town became a municipality in 1870 thanks to Celso Vicencio Hernández, and after his death in 1908 his surname was added to its name.

The town is known today for stuffed toys. A 2021 Quadratín report says eight of every ten plush toys sold in Mexico are made here, in around 250 workshops by DENUE's count, with 14 February the best day of the year and bears the top seller. In 2019 a team of 150 people, many of them local plush makers, sewed Xonita, 19.41 m long and 9.5 m tall, which Guinness recognised as the world's largest stuffed toy. The patron-saint feast is San Francisco de Asís on 4 October, and the dish the municipality is proudest of is the torta de helado, an ice-cream sandwich.

It is a working town rather than a postcard: go to see the centre and the town hall (built 1931 to 1945), and to buy plush straight from a workshop, especially around February.
