About San Antonio Buenavista

San Antonio Buenavista is a pueblo originario in the municipality of Toluca, south of the capital and, according to Milenio, almost at the foot of the Nevado de Toluca. It stands at 2,764 metres. The population grew from 890 people in 1900 to 5,937 in 2010 and slipped to 5,758 in the 2020 census. It should not be confused with the other San Antonio Buenavista, in Zoquiapan.

The name comes from its patron saint, Saint Anthony of Padua, and his day, 13 June, is the date to come. The fiesta begins early with the mañanitas, followed by flowers on the altar, a brass band and a mass at about one in the afternoon in the main church, where the saint's statue is set in the middle surrounded by flowers. Milenio's 2025 report says the devotion is more than a hundred years old in the community, that the traditional fair has lost strength in recent decades, and that the steward and several families organise the celebration, which has carried on despite attempts to end it.

As elsewhere, people ask Saint Anthony for love: women light a candle or leave 13 coins, and some turn his image upside down to ask for a miracle, as Meganoticias and Milenio reported. Outside the fiesta it is a quiet neighbourhood of Toluca, with no tourist sights of its own that we could document.

How to get to San Antonio Buenavista

Drive from Toluca: 10 min, 7 km

San Antonio Buenavista lies south of Toluca, about 5 km in a straight line from the city centre and about 10 km from Metepec (roughly 10 to 20 minutes by car, depending on traffic). Without a car, Toluca is the base: the El Insurgente interurban train (Observatorio–Zinacantepec, about 50 minutes from Observatorio to Toluca, trains every 5 to 7 minutes, Monday to Friday 5 am to midnight) has a Toluca Centro station, and from there you continue by taxi or local transport. In Mexico City the train starts at Observatorio, which links to the Metro (Lines 1 and 12) and the Terminal Poniente bus station. We found no source for the bus or combi routes to the village; ask at the station or with drivers in Toluca.
