About San Pedro Tultepec

This is not the fireworks Tultepec: San Pedro Tultepec, in the municipality of Lerma, lives on wooden furniture. According to Wikipedia, about 80 percent of the people work in carpentry, and Benito Juárez street, the main avenue, is lined with furniture shops and workshops where you buy straight from the maker: dining sets, bedroom sets, bed bases, chairs, bookcases, desks, sofas. Styles run from classic to minimalist, and several workshops make pieces to order.

The town sits at about 2,576 m beside the Chimaliapan marshes, and in earlier times people here worked tule reeds. Its formal founding is dated to 1535 under Vasco de Quiroga, who resettled people from Michoacán and from the hospital-town of Santa Fe; until 1874 it belonged to San Mateo Atenco, and since then it has been part of Lerma. INEGI counted 13,634 residents in 2010. The parish is dedicated to Saint Peter.

The big feast is the Virgen de la Candelaria on 2 February, with dances, fireworks and mole rojo with rice; the municipality also holds a furniture festival. For shopping, México Desconocido suggests Monday to Thursday, when it is quieter, and for a large piece it helps to bring a truck or hire one of the delivery trucks on site.
