About San Bartolo Oxtotitlán

San Bartolo Oxtotitlán, in Jiquipilco municipality, is an Otomí village of about 5,700 people (INEGI 2020), the largest in the municipality, at 2,720 m. The name, from oztotl (cave) and titlán (among), means "among the caves". It lies between Jocotitlán, Villa del Carbón, Temoaya and Ixtlahuaca, on cold, damp ground that produces many species of wild mushroom and pulque agaves. Pottery, clay figurines and obsidian points have been found in the surrounding hills, a sign that people lived here before the Conquest.

The village's woodland covers hundreds of hectares of pine and oak and has a few named spots: the Jabalí dam, Cerro de la Bufa and the Mirla spring to the south, said to have petroglyphs. The local legends come from these hills. One tells of an old church whose enormous bell stayed buried after people tried to haul it out with horses and chains; another says a giant rock on the Bufa is a door to the Devil's house.

August is the time to come. The patron feast of San Bartolomé Apóstol is on the 24th, and from 23 to 25 August the Feria del Hongo serves dishes made from more than 125 varieties, cooked by the producing families (that is how the fifth edition was announced in 2023). Arrieros and concheros dance. The village also marks the Virgin of Guadalupe on 12 December and Day of the Dead on 1 and 2 November. People speak Spanish and Otomí.
