About Cepeda

Cepeda is a village in the municipality of Halachó, in western Yucatán near the Campeche border, about 4.5 km northwest of the town of Halachó as the crow flies. With 3,685 inhabitants in the 2020 census it is the second-largest community in the municipality after Halachó itself, and it has grown fast: 426 people in 1900, 2,571 in 2000 and 3,064 in 2010.

The village is named after Manuel Cepeda Peraza (1828–1869), a general who served as governor of Yucatán in the 1860s and whose statue stands in Mérida's Parque Hidalgo. Since 1910, according to the state government's municipal history, Cepeda and the neighbouring village of Cuch Holoch have been governed from Halachó, which became the seat of a municipality in its own right in 1918.

Cepeda is a place where people live and farm rather than a sight, and there are no visitor services, but it is part of the everyday landscape of the western henequen zone. For a church, a market and food, go on to Halachó; its main fiesta, for Santiago Apóstol, runs from 19 July to 4 August.
