About Kiní

Kiní is a village and comisaría of Motul municipality in the old henequen zone of northern Yucatán, about 5 km northwest of the town of Motul, which is itself about 42 km east of Mérida. With 1,737 people at the 2020 census it is the largest settlement in the municipality after Motul itself. The name comes from Maya. The village sits on flat ground just 2 metres above sea level, among the fields and old haciendas that surround Motul.

Kiní has grown steadily for more than a century: 443 people lived here in 1900, about 700 by 1950, around 1,500 from the 1990s and more than 1,700 today. The old hacienda of Ticopó Gutiérrez stands a couple of kilometres outside the village. The centre of village life is the main church, dedicated to San Mateo, the community's patron saint, which stands behind an arched gateway in its atrium wall.

The biggest day of the year is the feast of the Virgen de la Asunción on 15 August, part of the village's annual devotional fiesta. In 2025 the faithful began arriving before 7 in the morning; the parish priest of San Juan Bautista in Motul said mass in front of the church of San Mateo, and then a large procession carried the image of the Virgin through the main streets with mariachi and a charanga band, followed by long lines to venerate the image and serenades by mariachis and local bands. Outside fiesta time Kiní is a quiet farming village, a short detour from Motul.
