About Sacapuc
Sacapuc sits 11 km northwest of Motul as the crow flies, and Motul itself is around 42 km east of Mérida. The village is one of Motul's comisarías, set on a plain only 5 metres higher than the sea, and it is ringed by other former henequen communities: San José Hilí roughly 4 km south, Timul 4 to 5 km northwest, Kiní about 5 km southeast. Sacapuc is a Maya name.
Population figures trace steady growth during the first half of the 1900s, from 292 residents in 1900 to 703 by 1950, and then a high point of 949 in 1980. Numbers eased off after that, to 690 in 2005 and 658 when the 2020 census was taken. As with Timul, Kiní and San José Hilí, the settlement formed around a hacienda, and some of the estate's old buildings are still standing among the houses.
The main church, the comisaría building, where the local authority has its office, and a small park make up the core of the village. Sacapuc has nothing set up for tourists, so plan on a brief look as part of a loop through the villages northwest of Motul: San José Hilí for its arcaded hacienda, Timul for its hacienda chimney, and Kiní for the church of San Mateo. Back in Motul, the municipal seat, you can see San Juan Bautista, a church built in the 17th century, and the house where Felipe Carrillo Puerto was born, which is now a museum.
