About Timul

Timul belongs to Motul and lies in the northwest of that municipality, about 15 km in a straight line from the town of Motul, which is itself 42 km east of Mérida. There is another Timul, a hacienda in Tahdziú in the south of the state, which should not be confused with it. Its population went from 180 in 1900 to 884 in 2005 and 1,015 in 2020, making it one of the larger comisarías of Motul today.

Its boom came with henequen, when the estate was owned by Benita Palma de Campos, who had received several haciendas around Motul from her husband, Roque Jacinto Campos Marrufo. The labourers were paid in the estate's own tokens; the Enciclopedia Yucatanense lists them under Benita Palma de C., and collectors seek them out. San José Hilí and Kancabchén Ucí, also in Motul, belonged to the same family.

The hacienda survives inside the village as stone walls and a tall chimney from the old engine room, next to the ground where people now play basketball; across from it is the comisaría building, where the local authority works. Timul has no tourist services and takes little time to see on a drive through the henequen country toward the coast. In Motul itself you will find the 17th-century church of San Juan Bautista and the birthplace of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, now a museum.
