About San Martín de los Cansecos
Los Cansecos, as the colourful sign in its plaza has it, lies in Oaxaca's Central Valleys at about 1,520 metres, in the Ejutla district. It is the seat of a small municipality that shares borders only with San José del Progreso and Ejutla de Crespo. The town has grown over the decades: 582 people in 1900, 715 in 2005, 816 in 2010 and 933 in 2020 (491 women, 442 men). Almost nobody speaks an indigenous language; in the municipality only 11 of 1,059 people did in 2025.
The setting is open valley with low hills, and the climate is semi-dry and semi-warm, averaging 18 to 20 °C with 600 to 800 mm of rain a year. Low peaks surround it: Yaniche 1.7 km west, El Brujo about 4 km southeast, and Paxtle at 2,115 m about 5 km east. Close neighbours are Monte del Toro, El Vergel, Santa Marta Chichihualtepec and San José del Progreso.
The patron saint's fiesta is on 11 November, for San Martín Obispo: calendas, a procession, a fair, fireworks, brass-band music and flower committees. That is when the town fills with visitors and community life is easiest to see.

How to get to San Martín de los Cansecos
Drive from Oaxaca: 50 min, 53 km
The town sits beside federal highway 175 (Oaxaca–Puerto Ángel), the same road that goes on to Ejutla de Crespo, about 9 km (approx.) to the south. From Oaxaca city, take highway 175 south toward Ocotlán and Ejutla and carry on to the town.
By public transport: a travel guide says colectivos heading south leave from around the Mercado de Abastos in Oaxaca; ask for one going to Ejutla and tell the driver you get off at Los Cansecos. We found no bus timetable with a documented stop in town. By car the access is a paved highway.
