About Museo Subacuático de Arte (MUSA)
The Museo Subacuático de Arte, known by its initials MUSA, is a collection of roughly 500 cement sculptures placed on the sea floor inside the Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc National Park, the marine park that wraps around Cancún's hotel zone and the west side of Isla Mujeres. It has two working galleries: Manchones, a sandy stretch off the southwest coast of Isla Mujeres with around 477 pieces at about 8 to 10 metres, and Punta Nizuc, at the southern tip of Cancún's hotel zone, with some two dozen works in water about 3 to 4 metres deep. The museum's office and a small land gallery with replicas are in Cancún.
The idea came from the marine park's director, Jaime González Cano, together with Roberto Díaz Abraham. Cancún's natural reefs, Manchones above all, were taking a beating from hundreds of thousands of snorkellers and divers a year, and the museum was meant to give those visitors somewhere else to go while the coral recovered. The first pieces went down in 2009 and the museum was officially opened on 27 November 2010. British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor made the first and best-known works, including La Evolución Silenciosa (The Silent Evolution), a crowd of more than 400 life-size human figures; Mexican artists such as Elier Amado Gil and Roberto Díaz Abraham added later pieces. The figures are made of pH-neutral marine cement and fixed to the bottom, and over the years sponges, algae and coral have grown over them, so they look different on every visit.
There is no ticket office on the water: you see the galleries on a tour. Shallow Punta Nizuc suits snorkellers and glass-bottom boats, reached by speedboat across the Nichupté lagoon and through the mangrove channels from marinas in the hotel zone. The deeper Manchones gallery is mostly for divers, from Cancún or Isla Mujeres. How much you see depends on currents and visibility, and the port captain closes the sea to small boats on rough days. The marine park charges its own access bracelet on top of the tour price.
