About Punta Nizuc

Punta Nizuc is the rocky point at the southern end of Cancún's hotel zone, around km 21 of Boulevard Kukulcán, where the barrier island meets the Nizuc channel that links the Nichupté lagoon with the sea. It is about 10 km from Cancún International Airport. Its reefs make up one of the three sections of the Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc National Park, decreed by President Ernesto Zedillo on 15 March 1996 in a ceremony held at the Nizuc channel itself; the Punta Nizuc section covers about 2,576 hectares of sea.

On land the point is taken up by two resorts, Club Med and Nizuc Resort & Spa, and public access from the road is limited. Most people see Punta Nizuc from the water. Speedboats and small boats leave marinas on the Nichupté lagoon, wind through the mangroves (the trip sold as the 'jungle tour') and come out through the channel to snorkel on the reef, the nearest coral to the hotel zone and the most visited in Cancún. The shallow Punta Nizuc gallery of MUSA, the underwater sculpture museum, is here too, with about two dozen works in some 4 metres of water, among them The Last Supper by Jason deCaires Taylor.

The heavy traffic has a cost. In 2007 a tourist submarine and a dredge ran aground on the reef and damaged around 1,000 square metres of coral, hurricanes have broken more, and CONANP and partners run coral nurseries to replant it. Boats need a permit to work in this section of the park, and every visitor must buy the park's access bracelet. Currents can be strong and visibility changes from day to day.
