About Punta Mosquito

Punta Mosquito is the point on Holbox's north shore east of the village where the beach gives way to shifting sandbars, shallow channels and mangrove. The bars rise and sink with the tide and run parallel to the coast, shaped by wind, waves and currents, and the area is one of the most photographed spots on the island. It lies inside the Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protection Area.

The usual way there is on foot. From the town beach you walk north-east past the last hotels and then wade out a little into the sea, following the shallowest line along the coast. At low tide the deepest stretches come up to about 70 cm, while at high tide the shallow route is hard to find and some sections are thigh-deep, so it pays to check the tide table and go early before the heat builds. Beyond a certain point only walking is allowed, and the further you go the emptier it gets.

Resident and migratory birds feed in the shallows, and between April and October flamingos come to the area to feed. From November to May the steady winds make Punta Mosquito one of the island's kitesurfing spots. The point is also a stop on the boat tours that take in Isla Pájaros, Isla de la Pasión and the Yalahau spring.
