About Cocoyol

Cocoyol is a small village in the municipality of Chemax, in the far east of Yucatán, about 20 km northeast of the town of Chemax. The municipality borders Quintana Roo to the east, Valladolid to the south and west, and Temozón and Tizimín to the north, so Cocoyol sits close to the state line. The land is flat bush country about 27 meters above sea level, and the 2010 census counted 629 people.

Before the Spanish conquest the area belonged to the Cupul Maya chiefdom, whose territory took in much of what is now eastern Yucatán. In the middle of the 19th century the region was the scene of bloody fighting during the Caste War, the long Maya uprising that began in 1847.

There are no tourist services in the village. The time to come is the patron saint's fiesta, held from 10 to 13 June in honour of San Antonio de Padua. Otherwise it is a quiet stop for travellers exploring the back roads east of Valladolid on their way toward Quintana Roo.
