About Kuxeb

Kuxeb is a small Maya village in the municipality of Chemax, in the far east of Yucatán. It lies about 24 km north-northeast of the town of Chemax and about 39 km northeast of Valladolid in a straight line, at around 27 m above sea level, in the flat bush country between Highway 180 and the north of the municipality. Its neighbours include Mucel, a few kilometres to the northeast, and Sisbichén to the west.

Kuxeb is a young village. The 1930 census recorded nobody living here; 93 people were counted in 1940, and the population grew slowly to 190 by 1970 and then faster, to 590 in 2000, 724 in 2010 and 908 in the 2020 census. The name comes from Maya. Like the rest of Chemax municipality, the people here live mainly from the milpa, growing maize and beans along with chili, tomato and jícama, and from raising cattle and pigs.

There is nothing set up for visitors in Kuxeb: no hotels, restaurants or attractions. It is simply one of the many small Maya communities scattered through the woods of eastern Yucatán, and a page for travellers who want to know where a place on the map is and how to reach it. Treat it as a village where people live and work, and ask before taking photos of people.
