About Pocoboch

Pocoboch is a village in the municipality of Calotmul, in eastern Yucatán, about 8 km south-east of the town of Calotmul in a straight line. With 898 people at the 2020 census it is the second-largest place in the municipality after the seat, and it has grown steadily: 123 people lived here in 1900 and 774 in 2005. Until 1910 the census wrote its Maya name as Pocboch.

The village's landmark is its old church, a plain stone building with a steep gabled front, standing on an open square. Life here follows the rhythm of the rest of the municipality, where the land is used mainly for cattle, forestry and farming, and where crafts include leatherwork, machine-embroidered huipiles and hemp hammocks.

Pocoboch has no tourist services of its own, but it is a short drive from Calotmul, whose 1749 church holds a gilded altarpiece and a much-venerated image of the Immaculate Conception, celebrated every year from 1 to 8 December. Valladolid, Tizimín and Espita are all within easy reach.
