About El Cuyo

El Cuyo is a fishing village of about 1,800 people (1,787 in the 2020 census) at the northeastern tip of Yucatán, close to the border with Quintana Roo and about 270 kilometers from Mérida. It belongs to the municipality of Tizimín and sits inside the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, about 3 meters above the Gulf of Mexico. It is the farthest beach from Mérida, and the approach road runs through mangroves where flamingos are sometimes seen just before town.

The village began as a ranch called Cuyo de Ancona, which worked timber, dyewood, chicle and crops; other estates such as Chiquilá, Emal, Moctezuma and Yalahau were later joined to it, and in 1895 it was issuing its own tokens to workers as the property of Ramón Ancona Bolio. Today fishing is still the main work, and tourism is small-scale: there are no big hotels or resorts, only guesthouses with a handful of rooms, a few kite schools, and palapa restaurants along Avenida Veranera serving the day's catch.

The beach is wide and white, with very shallow water where you can wade out a hundred meters or more: Playa Cocal lies west of the harbor entrance and Playa El Cuyo to the east. Reliable winds have made it one of the best-known kitesurfing spots in Yucatán. The red-and-white lighthouse stands among the houses, and the town pier is the place for sunrise and sunset. The flamingo nesting colonies of the reserve are concentrated in the El Cuyo basin, and boat, kayak and birding trips go out into the lagoons behind the village.

Drive from Tizimín: 1 h 50 min, 87 km

From Mérida, drive east to Tizimín and then north through Colonia Yucatán to El Cuyo, about three and a half hours (you can also go via Valladolid and turn north toward Tizimín). From Cancún it is just under three hours. By bus, take an Autobuses del Noreste bus from Mérida (Calle 67 between 50 and 52) to Tizimín, about 2 hours, then a second bus or shared van to El Cuyo, about 45 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes; vans charge about 70 pesos and leave once they fill. The sand track along the coast from Las Coloradas is a controlled-access route inside the reserve, open to visitors only with authorized tours.
