Town 28 km northwest of San Sebastián del Oeste
A colorful village northeast of town and start of a hike past Hacienda La Victoria to La Escondida, a cave with basalt columns.
Los Reyes is a small, colorful village in the mountains northeast of San Sebastián del Oeste. While Real Alto recalls the early colonial mines, Los Reyes, like San Sebastián itself, reflects the prosperity of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when mining in the area had a second boom.
Today it is best known as the starting point of a beautiful walk. The route passes through the old center of Hacienda La Victoria and then follows a stream to La Escondida, a cave with a set of basalt columns, six-sided pillars of volcanic rock formed as lava cooled slowly. Along the way there are hanging bridges, abandoned mine workings and a waterfall.
The vegetation is a surprise this high in the sierra: guamúchil trees, chia plants, banana groves and avocado orchards line the stream. The walk is best done with a local guide, who will know the current state of the bridges and the trail.
