Lake 19 km south of Bacalar
A quiet turquoise lagoon at the village of Huay-Pix, part of the same lake system as Bacalar, with small balnearios for swimming.
Laguna Milagros is a lagoon at the village of Huay-Pix, about 20 minutes south of Bacalar on the road toward Escárcega and 15 minutes from Chetumal. It belongs to the same chain of water bodies as Laguna Bacalar, connected to Laguna Xul-Ha and the Estero de Chac, and it shares the same clear water in shades of turquoise and blue over a pale bottom.
It is a much smaller and quieter place than Bacalar, without the boat tours and crowds. Along the shore are small balnearios and restaurants where you can swim from a dock, eat, and spend the afternoon, and the calm water is good for kayaking and paddleboarding. The surroundings are low forest, and the village itself is small and residential; its Maya name is usually translated as "sorcerer's blanket".
Local families from Chetumal come here on weekends, and some places around the lagoon offer temazcal, the traditional steam bath. On a weekday you may find you have the water almost to yourself, which is the main reason to make the trip from Bacalar.
What to see and do
Swim from the dock at one of the lakeside balnearios.
Paddle a kayak or paddleboard on the calm water.
Try a temazcal steam bath where one is offered.
Have lunch at a restaurant on the shore.
Getting there
From Bacalar, drive south on Highway 307 and west on Federal Highway 186 toward Escárcega; Huay-Pix is on the highway, about 20 minutes in total. Turn toward the lagoon in the village. Taxis from Bacalar or Chetumal will take you, and buses along Highway 186 pass through Huay-Pix. Balnearios usually charge a small entry fee.
