About Kinichná
Kinichná comes from the Maya K'iinich naj, the House of the Sun God. It is essentially one huge building in the forest of southern Quintana Roo, about two kilometres from Dzibanché along the Morocoy road, and it belonged to that city: a pre-Hispanic causeway, a sacbé, links it to the rest of the complex. It is an acropolis with no equal in the south of the state.
The acropolis rises over a plaza ringed by smaller buildings. A broad platform carries a stepped, triadic pyramid, with one temple on top and two on its flanks. Building began in the Middle Preclassic, and the site saw most use in the first half of the Classic period. The temples held the tombs of important rulers. In the so-called Temple of the Jaguar archaeologists found two people buried with a jaguar and a rich offering of ceramic plates and vessels, a funerary mask and several jade pieces; the same structure held the skeleton of a young woman laid on two grinding stones (metates).
It keeps Dzibanché's hours, and both fit in one trip: Kinichná is two kilometres further along the same road.
How to get to Kinichná
From Chetumal take Federal Highway 186 toward Escárcega and at km 58 turn off toward Morocoy and San Pedro Peralta; follow the paved road north and, past the La Pista turn-off, it reaches Dzibanché (km 14) and then Kinichná (km 16). That is about 83 km and 1 h 30 min from Chetumal, and the same from Bacalar, the nearest Pueblo Mágico. There is no public transport to the site; go by car, taxi or tour from Chetumal or Bacalar.
