Lake 10 km southwest of Bacalar
A narrow channel south of town where the lagoon flows fast enough to carry you along, past some of Bacalar's stromatolites.
Los Rápidos, the rapids, are the one place where Bacalar's famously still water actually moves. About 13 kilometers south of town, a narrow channel lined with mangroves joins Laguna Bacalar with the smaller Laguna Xul-Ha, and the water runs through it with a steady current. You walk upstream along the bank, step in wearing a life vest, and let the water carry you back down, over and over.
The channel is also one of the best places to see stromatolites, the rocky mounds that make Bacalar special to scientists. They are built very slowly by colonies of microbes, and they are one of the oldest forms of life on Earth. They look like pale gray rocks under the surface, and they are alive and easily broken, which is why you are asked not to stand on them.
The spot is run as a private beach club with a restaurant, docks, showers and kayaks, and you pay an entry fee that usually includes the life vest. It gets busy on weekends and during Mexican holidays, when local families come for the day. On a quiet weekday morning the light on the water is as good as anywhere on the lagoon.
What to see and do
Float down the channel with the current in a life vest, then walk back up and do it again.
Look for the stromatolites under the surface, and keep your feet off them.
Rent a kayak or paddleboard to explore the mangroves toward Laguna Xul-Ha.
Have lunch at the restaurant on the water.
Skip sunscreen and repellent before swimming; they are not allowed in the water here.
Getting there
